Smooth Sailing in Sardinia

In September, I joined a weeklong sailing trip in Sardinia with Janes Plain Sailing, a small British company that runs womens sailing holidays. After a six-day trek in the Pyrenees, I was ready for a slower pace; relaxed days, hands-on sailing, and lively conversation with a great crew.
We started in Cannigione, a quiet harbor town on Sardinias northeast coast. Our group of six guests, along with skipper Karen and host Suzy, settled aboard a 48-foot Beneteau Oceanis. After unpacking and a quick safety briefing, we wandered into town for a delicious seafood dinner and introductions over local wine.
The next morning we motored out of the harbor and raised the sails. Each day brought a new cove; perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and lunch at anchor. Always within sight of land, we traced the islands rugged coastline and small isles. Evenings brought dining ashore on Sardinian specialties like wild boar and fresh seafood. We explored La Maddalenas tangle of narrow streets and lively piazzas, and sailed north to Bonifacio, a dramatic Corsican town perched high on limestone cliffs.
The sailing was as hands-on as you wanted it to be. Guests could steer, trim sails, or simply relax. I joined in whenever possible, being the only one with much prior experience, I was eager to learn more from Karen, including new terms like how to sweat the main instead of jump it.
By weeks end, Id picked up new skills and made good friends. It was the perfect mix of learning and leisure, good food, good company, and Mediterranean sunshine.
