OWSA Movie Night

Last week, OWSA members gathered for something a little different: the club's very first Movie Night. Instead of hoisting sails, members settled in together for a screening of Moana — a film that, as it turns out, resonates deeply with sailors of every experience level.

A Story That Hits Close to Home

For many in the sailing community, Moana isn't just an animated adventure — it's a celebration of voyaging, wayfinding, and the courage it takes to head out onto open water. Member Gail Taylor captured that connection perfectly:

"Moana is giving young women a place in their minds and hearts to love sailing, voyaging and adventures. I've seen young girls on a park bench playing sailing and wayfinding. Made my eyes squirt a little bit. So very excited for those little girls having visions of possibilities."

Vice Commodore Leticia Christopherson reflected on how the film speaks to sailors who come to the sport later in life:

"I'm always surprised to know women haven't watched this movie. As sailors, we have various reasons why we love this sport and what it means to us. This movie shows me you are never too old to learn. Take the time to listen to what your heart wants and nourish it. Watching Moana, just like sailing, is better with friends."

That message — that it's never too late to chase the water — struck a chord in the room. By the film's end, the applause said it all. Smiles all around, and a shared sense that everyone had just watched a story written, in some small way, for them.
