OWSA Acquires a New Sailboat - The Calypte

OWSA maintains a small fleet of sailboats on the Columbia for use in educational programs including classes on sailing & boat maintenance and for the BOAST Program. The exciting news is that we have acquired a new sailboat, the Calypte -- an Ericson 27 that was built in 1973. OWSA purchased it this past September, and it is being moored at McCuddy's on Marine Drive.

The Calypte is a 27 foot masthead sloop. It features a roller-furling foresail and an outboard motor with tiller steering, which maintains consistency for members who have learned to sail on OWSA's other boats, Salud and Picaroon. The motor is a 9.9HP Yamaha high thrust 4 stroke motor with electric start with a built in 12 gallon gas tank and gauges in the cockpit. The Calypte is larger than any of the boats we currently own, and so will offer opportunity for members to learn about navigating a larger boat designed specifically for cruising.

Laura & friend tie up Calypte safely to the dock

Now that OWSA owns the Calypte, they want to be sure that the boat is safe & ready, so they have assembled the Calypte Planning Group. Members Laura Gadley, Carol Baker, Berry Kruijning & Lynda Romeo make up this group and are assessing & addressing the needs of Calypte in order to prepare her for the 2024 sailing season.

OWSA's plan is to have the Calypte available for membership use through an expansion of the BOAST program, enabling sailors to progress to intermediate level. We have a 2 Track program detailed which will be presented to the membership at the January OWSA meeting.

Please apply to the BOAST Program by February 15th.

We are also currently seeking a Calypte Managing Skipper. The Calypte Managing Skipper will work in conjunction with the Boast Coordinator to oversee all aspects of Calyptes use in the Boast program. (Information on how to apply will be added here once it is available.)

Contact boast@owsa.net or fleetmanager@owsa.net with questions about BOAST or the Calypte Managing Skipper Position.

If you want to learn more about the Ericson 27, you can read up on what the Practical Sailor has to say about it.
