Big Sisters, Little Sisters: Building Community One Bracelet at a Time

At the end of our recent General Meeting, something truly heartwarming happened. We brought back an old tradition from 10 years ago—our Big Sister-Little Sister pairing event. It was such a joy to see this tradition come alive again, creating connections between our more seasoned sailors and those newer to the group or sailing itself. The idea is simple: were here to support each other, whether it's on the water or in the club.
To break the ice and start building those connections, we did something really fun. Each Big Sister and Little Sister made bracelets for each other. There were beads everywhere—bright colors, unique shapes, and so many laughs as everyone shared stories and got to know one another. By the end, it wasnt just about the bracelets; it was about the memories we were making together.
Whats so special about this tradition is how it brings us closer. The Big Sisters are there to share tips, cheer on their Little Sisters, and help them feel at home here at OWSA. And honestly, the Little Sisters bring so much energy and curiosity to the mix—its a win-win for everyone. Its amazing to think about how much we can all learn from each other.
Seeing this tradition come back was such a reminder of what makes our community so special. Whether its swapping ideas for trimming a sail, planning the next adventure, or just checking in to see how things are going, these relationships are already making waves—and I know they'll keep growing.
Heres to old traditions, new friendships, and all the adventures waiting for us on the horizon. If you weren't there, I hope you'll join us next time. It's moments like these that remind me why I love being part of this incredible group of women sailors!
