Is Sailing on the Horizon?

Published 7:49am on 14 May 2020

Sailing is on our Horizon, but we are still not sure how far away the Horizon is........it is weird not to be sailing in May, but we are paying close attention as the Governor phases out the Stay at Home orders.  Special thanks to the OWSA Board for working through the cancellations, safety requirements and scheduling changes during these uncertain times.  I appreciate our volunteers creativity identifying how we can stay connected and prepare for the day we can get out on the water.  We will take a phased approach to engaging in OWSA programs considering risk, implementation of new safety guidelines and changes in state regulations.

Work has continued on Picaroon in April and we hope to get her back in the water soon. Of course this work has been done while still following the social distancing rules and restrictions in place. The Rangers are in the water and we are looking forward to sailing as soon as possible.  The OWSA Programs Team are developing safety guidelines to determine how and when we can get BOAST Participants out on the water.

Wednesday Night Sails (WNS) will be on pause until we are confident we can sail safely. Thank you to our Community Skippers for their feedback and the lively panel discussion at the May General Meeting.  In addition to following the State of Oregon's Stay at Home Orders, our Skippers feedback will help inform when and if we can start scheduling WNS this sailing season and what it might look like.

Check out the OWSA website for updates on virtual race seminars, free or low cost webinars through US Sailing an American Sailing Association. If you have time on your hands, consider lending a hand to OWSA as either the bookkeeper or class registrar - email volunteer@owsa.net to learn more about these opportunities.

We are all anxious to get out on the water this year and we will work to do it as soon and as safely as we possibly can within the state regulations.

Look forward to seeing you virtually on May 19th at Nauti Drinks.  Hope this finds you and your family healthy and safe.
